Why Sui Is Becoming a Blockchain for Next-Gen Web3 Games

Why Sui Is Becoming a Blockchain for Next-Gen Web3 Games

Web3 gaming is caught between two problems. Slow blockchains cannot handle thousands of microtransactions in real time. High fees put off players accustomed to free-to-play mobile games. As a result, blockchain games remain a niche product for crypto enthusiasts rather than the mainstream gaming audience.

Sui offers a different approach. Instead of patches on top of account-based architecture, the network is built around an object-oriented data model, where every in-game asset – a sword, a character, a skin – exists as an independent object. Parallel transaction execution and the Mysticeti consensus mechanism ensure finality in a fraction of a second. zkLogin removes the entry barrier: players log in via Google or Apple, without the need for seed phrases or installing a wallet.

Let’s examine how Sui’s architecture solves the challenges of Web3 gaming and why major publishers – from SEGA to SNK – are choosing this particular network.

Sui as a Layer 1 blockchain

Sui is a blockchain Layer 1 developed by Mysten Labs and launched on the mainnet in May 2023. The team consists of engineers who previously worked on the Diem project at Meta. The Move programming language, created for Diem, formed the basis of Sui but was reworked to suit an object-oriented data model.

Sui operates on a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) mechanism. Validators confirm transactions, whilst SUI holders delegate their tokens and receive a share of the rewards. The SUI token, with a hard cap of 10 billion coins, is used for gas fees, staking and network governance.

Sui’s architecture as a standalone Layer 1, rather than a second-layer solution, gives the network its own consensus mechanism and independent security. This attracts not only gaming studios but also projects from related niches – from decentralised exchanges to next-generation betting platforms such as Dexsport – for whom fast finalisation and low fees are crucial.

The object-oriented model – the core of the architecture

Traditional blockchains – Ethereum, Solana, Aptos – use an account-based model. The balance of each address is stored in the global state. Any transaction alters the shared ledger, and the network must order all operations to avoid conflicts.

Sui takes a different approach. Instead of a global state, the network operates using objects. This is the essence of Sui blockchain object-centric model. Every asset – a token, an NFT, a smart contract – is an object with a unique identifier, an owner and a set of properties. There are three types of objects: those owned by a single owner (owned), shared objects (shared) and immutable objects (immutable).

For games, this changes everything. A character is an object. The sword in their inventory is a separate object nested within the character. The skin applied to the sword is also an object. This nesting naturally reflects the game’s logic. No workarounds via smart contracts, no hash tables to store relationships between items.

When a player transfers a sword to another player, Sui recognises that the transaction involves only an ‘owned’ object. The network processes it without requiring full consensus – quickly. Two players exchanging different items do not block one another: their transactions run in parallel.

The Move language ensures asset security at the type system level. Resources in Move cannot be accidentally copied or lost. The compiler eliminates an entire class of vulnerabilities that, on EVM chains, lead to token theft via re-entrancy. For games where the cost of an error is the loss of a rare NFT by a player, this is critical.

Parallel Execution and TPS

Parallelism is a direct consequence of the object-oriented model. If two transactions involve different objects, they are independent. Sui executes them simultaneously, without queuing.

Transactions involving ‘owned’ objects take the fast track. Validators verify the signature and owner, and confirm the operation via Byzantine Consistent Broadcast. Full consensus is not required. Finalisation takes less than 400 milliseconds.

Transactions involving ‘shared’ objects – such as interactions with a global exchange or a multiplayer arena – go through the Mysticeti consensus. The DAG (directed acyclic graph)-based protocol allows multiple validators to propose blocks simultaneously. Mysticeti requires just three rounds of messages to finalise a block – this is the theoretical minimum for BFT protocols.

Mysticeti V2, deployed in November 2025, integrated transaction validation directly into the consensus mechanism. In controlled tests with 10 nodes, the protocol achieved 300,000 TPS with a latency of up to 1 second. With 50 nodes, it achieved 400,000 Sui blockchain transactions per second. Average finalisation time is around 0.5 seconds under a stable load of 200,000 TPS.

On the live mainnet, the figures are more modest. Following the implementation of Mysticeti V2, the network consistently maintains a peak of around 886 Sui blockchain TPS under normal load. On 4 July 2026, in a public experiment involving AI agents, the Sui mainnet reached a peak of 6,086,766 TPS – a record for a live network. This result was achieved through programmable lightning tunnels (off-chain channels followed by on-chain settlement), rather than pure on-chain throughput. However, even Sui’s baseline figure exceeds Ethereum’s throughput (around 30 TPS) and is comparable to Solana’s (averaging 1,300 TPS).

For games, this means: thousands of players can simultaneously level up their characters, trade on the marketplace and battle in the arena – without delays or fluctuating transaction fees.

zkLogin: Web3 access without seed phrases

The main challenge with onboarding to Web3 games is the wallet. Players must install an extension, create a wallet, write down a 12- or 24-word seed phrase, and buy tokens to pay for gas fees. Every step weeds out users.

zkLogin solves this. Players log into the game via Google, Apple, Facebook or Twitch – an account they already have. No seed phrases, no separate wallets.

Technically, it works like this. The OAuth provider issues a JWT token confirming the user’s identity. Sui generates a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) based on this token and a unique salt – the Sui blockchain zkLogin mechanism. The salt links the OAuth account to the Sui address, but remains private: the provider does not know the user’s address, and the network does not know their OAuth identifier. Self-custody is maintained – the player controls their assets via ephemeral keys tied to the session.

On the mainnet, zkLogin supports Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitch, AWS and several other providers. For developers, this paves the way for mass onboarding: the player doesn’t see the blockchain; they simply click ‘Sign in with Google’ – and receive a wallet with full control over their assets.

Developer tools

In addition to zkLogin, Sui offers several primitives tailored to gaming scenarios.

Sponsored transactions. The game pays the gas fees on the player’s behalf. The user signs the intent, and the sponsor covers the cost. The player sees no fees. The barrier to entry disappears for those who do not hold SUI tokens.

Programmable Transaction Blocks (PTB). Up to 1,024 operations in a single atomic transaction. The player completes a quest, receives a reward and upgrades their weapon – all with a single click. If any operation within the block fails, they are all rolled back. Integrity is guaranteed.

Sui Kiosk. A decentralised marketplace for in-game assets. A player lists an item for sale, but retains control of it until the transfer is complete. Rules regarding royalties and fees are enshrined in the Kiosk’s policy.

Dynamic NFTs. As a character levels up, their NFT attributes change. Weapons gain properties from battle victories. Everything is stored on-chain, without external databases. BIRDS on Sui uses Kiosk for its NFT marketplace, whilst Samurai Shodown R utilises dynamic NFTs to evolve mounts and equipment as the player progresses.

The Sui Gaming Ecosystem

By 2025–2026, the Sui blockchain ecosystem will bring together over 65 game studios and around 70 projects. Genres range from casual Telegram mini-apps to AAA games on next-generation engines, and every year new titles are added to the Sui blockchain gaming projects.

BIRDS is a Telegram game launched in July 2024. By 2025, it had attracted over 9 million users and recorded 24.2 million transactions. Players start with an egg that evolves through daily tasks. The game uses Sui Kiosk for its NFT marketplace and integrates with Sui Name Service for convenient transfers. BIRDS is an example of a bridge from Web2 to Web3: players do not need to install a wallet, as everything is built into Telegram.

Samurai Shodown R is a mobile MMORPG from SNK and LumiWave. The classic fighting game series has been reimagined through dynamic NFTs: mounts and gear evolve from level 1 to level 20. The project has been announced for SuiPlay0X1.

Code of Joker: Evolutions – a card battler under licence from SEGA. Development is being handled by Jokers Inc. – a team of former SEGA producers. The game runs on the Sui infrastructure via the Parasol platform.

XOCIETY – a third-person sci-fi extraction shooter, launched in Early Access on the Epic Games Store in December 2025. A metaverse with an economy on Sui.

DARKTIMES – a brawler royale from Blowfish Studios (Animoca Brands). Scandinavian medieval aesthetics, PvP battles.

Gamifly – a sports gaming platform with 2.4 million players and an average DAU of 8.4K.

SuiPlay0X1 – a portable games console developed in collaboration with Playtron. Price: $599. Supports games from Steam, Epic Games and blockchain titles on Sui. The console sold out during the pre-order phase. The first hardware product with native Web3 integration – an attempt to take blockchain gaming beyond the crypto audience.

Platforms such as Dexsport demonstrate how blockchain is moving beyond the realm of gaming alone. Dexsport is a decentralised, KYC-free betting platform supporting 100+ cryptocurrencies across 20+ networks. Fast payouts, a shared liquidity pool and transparent smart contracts solve the problems associated with traditional bookmakers: slow withdrawals, opaque settlements and account freezes. Sui’s approach to speed and fees is philosophically similar – to remove barriers between the user and the product.

Ethereum is slow and expensive, but has the largest developer ecosystem. Solana is fast, but suffers from periodic network outages and lacks an object-oriented model. Aptos is Sui’s closest relative in terms of the Move language, but uses an account-based model and Block-STM for parallelism. Block-STM executes transactions optimistically, rolling back conflicting ones. Sui works differently: dependencies are defined in advance through object ownership, and conflicts are structurally excluded.

For games, Sui’s object-oriented model is an advantage. A game asset as an object with a unique ID and owner is a natural representation that does not require workarounds via smart contracts.

Conclusion

Sui is not just another fast blockchain. It is a network where gaming scenarios are built into the architecture. The object-oriented model makes assets self-contained entities. Parallel execution and Mysticeti provide the speed required for thousands of concurrent players. zkLogin and sponsored transactions remove the barrier to entry. The ecosystem is growing – from Telegram games to the SuiPlay0X1 console and AAA projects from SEGA and SNK. Projects such as Dexsport demonstrate that the transparency and speed of the blockchain are transforming not only gaming but also related industries – betting, trading and DeFi.

FAQ

What makes Sui a suitable blockchain for Web3 games?

The object-based data model, parallel transaction execution and zkLogin. Assets exist as standalone objects, independent operations run in parallel, and players log in via Google or Apple without seed phrases.

How does Sui’s object-based model differ from an account-based one?

In account-based networks, all balances are stored in a global state – every transaction modifies the shared ledger. In Sui, each asset is a separate object with an owner. Transactions involving different objects do not conflict and are executed in parallel.

What is zkLogin and why do gamers need it?

It is a way to access Web3 via OAuth providers (Google, Apple, Twitch, Facebook) without seed phrases or having to set up a wallet. It works using zero-knowledge proofs and a unique salt. Self-custody is maintained – the player retains full control over their assets.

How many transactions per second does Sui process?

In controlled tests – up to 400,000 TPS with finalisation in under 1 second. On 4 July 2026, in an experiment with AI agents, the mainnet reached a peak of 6,086,766 TPS via off-chain tunnels. Under normal load, it handles around 886 TPS. Finalisation of ‘owned’ objects takes less than 400 ms.

Which games are already running on Sui?

BIRDS (9 million users), Samurai Shodown R by SNK, Code of Joker: Evolutions under licence from SEGA, XOCIETY, DARKTIMES, Gamifly, Pebble City. In total, around 70 projects from over 65 studios are in development.

Do you need a crypto wallet to play games on Sui?

No. zkLogin allows you to log in via Google, Apple or Twitch. Sponsored transactions eliminate the need for tokens to pay for gas fees. Players can play without even realising they’re using the blockchain.
